Location: Kritou Terra
Kritou Terra is located in the Paphos region at an altitude of 470 meters above sea level. The picturesque village of Kritou Terra is one of the wine villages in the area and also grows various other fruits and crops in its idyllic landscape. Kritou Terra is just 45 km from Paphos Airport and can be reached by following the B7 from Paphos and then turning onto the E711.
The village was once known as ‘Kritou’ under Frankish rule. On old maps, it is listed both as ‘Critu’ and ‘Terra,’ suggesting that originally there were two different villages that eventually merged. The village’s main church is dedicated to Panagia Chryseleousa, while the significant church of Agia Aikaterini, about 3 km from the village, has been beautifully restored and is used once a year on Agia Aikaterini’s feast day.
The residents of Kritou Terra are also proud of the village’s history as the birthplace of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios—the most significant dragoman of Cyprus—as well as its status as the site of the island’s first ‘casino’ during Ottoman rule in the 19th century. Inside the casino, rare folk art murals depict themes from popular legends.
The village also hosts the Cyprus Environmental Studies Centre (CESC), founded by the Terra Cypria Foundation in 1992, which aims to promote environmental and conservation education and awareness on the island.
